Fire and Ice: The Winter War of Finland and Russia

< Back Next >
Re-enactors put on their uniforms and get ready for shooting. They have driven all night across the border into Finland. Most are from St. Petersburg. The first day’s filming is at the Salpa Line Museum in Miehikkälä, which includes fortified trench works and a bunker.

Safety is the primary concern before any cameras roll. The action will be in areas where dynamite charges have been placed. Re-enactors receive extensive safety training from Stunt Coordinator Juha Pursiainen.

The Red Army comes under artillery fire as it charges Finnish positions. Explosions have been rigged by Konsta Mannerheimo and his crew. DP Michael Bowie and engineer Gary Groth capture the action on HD video. Photographer Hannes Heikura (left) shoots stills for a feature that will appear in the Helsinki Sanomat.

This photo by Hannes Heikura appeared on the front page of the Culture section of the Helsinki Sanomat on Sunday, February 20, 2005.
